A lot has changed since the last time I wrote about Beavertown, for one we’re in the midst of a heatwave in the UK but more importantly Beavertown have upped their craft beer game. Moving from the Hackney unit the brewery founded by Logan Plant (yes, son of Robert) to a bigger place in Tottenham Beavertown have opened up a tap room (go visit it) and rolled out their beers in cans.
I would love to get a definitive answer to whether or not beer is better served in a can or a bottle. I mean the volume is exactly the same and of course there is a stigma attached to canned beer (most people think Fosters, Carling etc) but in terms of preservation and taste, which is better? Anyway, I’ve previously given the Gamma Ray and 8-Ball five stars so when I picked up a can of Black Betty, their Black IPA I was ridiculously excited.
I’m growing such a fondness towards IPA and in particular a black IPA. I most recently waxed lyrical about the London Fields Black Ale. The Black Betty is incredibly hoppy and for a beer that is 7.4% it is very light, which comes as a massive surprise to me. However, that’s one of the beautiful things about Beavertown, producing high ABV brews that taste incredibly light. Beautiful / dangerous, depending on how you look at it. Can we talk about the new branding?
I’ve heard mixed things, comments such as, “It’s all a bit modern, bright and stands out.” Not sure where the negative bit is in that comment. So, I’m gonna say it, I prefer the new branding. It reminds me of more American craft breweries, definitely not a bad thing. Oh yeah, it tastes fucking great too, which is the main thing, right? There is a mixture of American hops and German malt in Black Betty, and she’s a mighty fine beer!
