REVIEW: Beavertown Smog Rocket

Beavertown Brewery
Smog Rocket Smoked Porter
5.4%
Tottenham, London, UK

I’ve almost reviewed ALL of the Beavertown range now and if you care to see what I think of Gamma Ray, 8 Ball and Black Betty then tab away. If you can’t be arsed to look then let’s just say I fucking loved them (scores were 4, 5, 5). I decided to do something different with the Smog Rocket. As I mentioned in my review of Black Betty Beavertown have recently smashed their production of canned beers and now they’re everywhere.

REVIEW: Buxton Axe Edge

Buxton Brewery
Axe Edge

Buxton, Derbyshire, UK

buxton brewery
I was just talking about how there isn’t enough breweries in the midlands recently but thanks to a friendly man in the BrewDog BottleDog shop in Kings Cross he recommended me Buxton Brewery. There was a plethora of beers I could’ve gone for by Buxton Brewery in BottleDog (big up the wide selection of beers) but I went for a high ABV IPA, of course. Buxton is based in Burton in Derbyshire and was founded by Geoff Quinn in 2008. There are around 14 core beers and there’s a lovely tap room where you can try all the beers. Must. Go.

REVIEW: Thornbridge Brewery Jaipur

Thornbridge Brewery
Jaipur IPA

Bakewell, Derbyshire, UK

Thornbridge
Like Buxton Brewery Thornbridge is based in Derbyshire and one of the best UK breweries in the country at the moment. I wrote up a little about the history of Thornbridge here but basically the guys that now run BrewDog were once upon a time at Thornbridge. As I mention in that post Thornbridge have some fantastic beers on offer and Jaipur is one of the best.

REVIEW: Ilkley Lotus IPA

ilkley-brewery
Ilkley Brewery has won several awards for a variety of its beers so I thought it was about time I tried a couple of their beers. I actually tried the Ilkley Pale first but was left a little bit disappointed with it. The brewery itself was first founded in 1873 but shut down in early 1920s however in 2009 Ilkley Brewery was revived and is now an essential part of the community in Ilkley. As a result they’ve been able to create jobs for local people and now produce well over 40,000 pints a week. Impressive!

REVIEW: Wild Beer Evolver

The Wild Beer Co
Evolver IPA
5.8%
Somerset, UK

Wild Beer Co
The Wild Beer Co are a craft beer company that are based in Somerset and have over 15 different beers. They were first founded in October 2012 and the really unique selling point about Wild Beer is that they do things a little bit differently. So one of the core beers is called ‘Cool As A Cucumber’ and is a 2.9% cucumber and mint brew. Pretty ace.

Siren
Siren Craft Brew are a relatively new brewery from Berkshire, just outside of London. The brewery was founded by Darron Anley in 2012 and in 2013 Siren Craft Brew started bottling their beers. There are four core beers that Siren regularly produce including Soundwave but also Undercurrent, Liquid Mistress and Broken Dream. I first experienced Siren from Clapton Craft when I purchased a growler of their Undercurrent pale ale, it was delicious.

Oakham
I don’t know that many breweries in the midlands however I’ve been aware of Oakham Ales for a while. My introduction was ordering a pint of Scarlet Macaw a lovely fruity number and since then I’ve been trying various beers by them. Oakham was officially opened on Friday 13th in October 2006 and since then has won a plethora of awards for its beers. Paul Hook and John Bryan are the two partners but Oakham Ales was originally the brainchild of John  Wood.

I ordered a few “must try” breweries from the wonderful beer lords at Ales by Mail recently and one of the breweries included Arbor. Based in the south west of England in Bristol Arbor are a brewery I’ve been desperate to try for ages. Arbor has been in existence since 2007 and as of October 2010 has two pubs in Bristol to its name. Head brewer is Jon Comer and they have around 10 core beers.

A couple of months ago I purchased a London pick ‘n’ mix case of 15 beers from the lovely people at Ales by Mail and it contained several limited edition beers including the Union Lager by Meantime Brewing Company. Meantime Brewing Company teamed up with Mr. Hyde to create a Vienna style lager.
