Back in Spring of this year I took on the Bermondsey mile which saw me stop off at Brew By Numbers, Partizan, Kernel etc. Whilst on Druid Street I visited Anspach & Hobday who share a space with fellow brewers, Bullfinch Brewery. I was massively impressed by Bullfinch and the pale ale I tried, humorously named, Hopocalypse. I also picked up a bottle of Citrageddon, a Black IPA.

Bullfinch haven’t been going all that long but I was massively impressed by the beers they’re producing. Safe to say they were the surprise package from the Bermondsey mile. I went away wanting more of Bullfinch and if there’s one thing I love it is a strong Black IPA. So the Citrageddon was always going to please my palate. The Black IPA is a strong hoppy ale that reminds me of London Fields Black American IPA. They describe it as, “A devastating amount of Citra hops and dark malts live in hoppy harmony.”

Citrageddon has that lovely balance between an IPA and a porter. It has the smooth fruity flavour and coffee aroma like a porter but all the hops you’d ever want. However, at 7% there’s no way I could drink these all night. Mark my words, Black IPA will get even bigger in 2015 and so will Bullfinch Brewery.
